Millipore Aims to Cut Carbon Footprint by 20 Percent

BILLERICA, Mass. -- Millipore Corp. unveiled a goal on Wednesday to reduce its carbon footprint by 20 percent during the next five years.

The company’s sustainability initiative will take aim at the its consumption of non-renewable resources and production of waste. Millipore also plans to introduce programs that will foster behaviorial changes conducive to environmental sustainability.

Millipore, which bills itself as a life science firm that provides technologies, tools and services for the bioscience research and biopharmaceutical manufacturing sectors, already has in place programs and metrics for solid waste recycling, wastewater production and environment, health and safety management programs.

"We're replacing fleet vehicles with Toyota Prius and Camry hybrids, we've saved over 1 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year through energy efficiency programs, and we're matching 10 percent of our energy usage worldwide with renewable energy sourced from U.S. wind farms," said David Newman, Millipore’s director of sustainability.

"Over the next few months we'll be stepping up our efforts in all of these areas and exploring additional ways to reduce our environmental impact -- through our products and packaging, manufacturing processes and LEED-certified building construction."

The company has an extensive sustainability section on its website that offers a glimpse into pilot programs executed in key areas, such as air emissions, water and green buildings. For instance, its Focused Factory Initiative allowed the company to consolidate several work sites into more efficient locations, allowing the company to grow while at the same time reducing its square footage and environmental footprint.
