OAKLAND, Calif. -- McDonald’s plans to begin selling environmentally certified coffee at its Australian and New Zealand locations, the company said last week.

More than 600 locatons within the two countries will sell coffee certified by the nonprofit Rainforest Alliance. Beginning next year, all coffee sold by the company will be certified by the group.

“Wanting to make the world a better place is no longer a niche [ideal] but a mainstream one," Catriona Noble of McDonald’s told the Sydney Morning Herald.

The coffee is made from Arabica beans from Brazil, Colombia and Costa Rica.

“Rainforest Alliance Certified farms are managed in a way that improves the livelihoods of farmers and farm workers, ensuring workers are treated with respect, paid decent wages, properly equipped and given access to education and medical treatment,” Sabrina Vigilante, senior marketing manager of the Rainforest Alliance, said in a statement.
