NEW YORK CITY, NY — Corporate Responsibility Officer magazine last night gave out its second annual Responsible CEO of the Year Awards to leaders from large, medium and small corporations, as well as NGOs, the public sector and social entrepreneurs.
The eight winners were chosen based on three sets of criteria, according to the CRO's editors:
First, we looked at the scope of the impact of the nominee -- have this person’s CR initiatives made larger-scale revenue, profit or size of population served relative to the other potential nominees?
Second, the out-front role taken by the nominee -- has this person truly put him or herself at personal risk if the initiative fails more than other potential nominees?
And third, each category has its own criteria -- large, mid-cap and small companies must be public, non-profits must be on GuideStar.org, corporate foundations must be members of CECP, and social entrepreneurs must fit one of three types listed in The Power Of Unreasonable People by John Elkington.
The 2009 award winners in all eight categories are:
• Large-Cap Companies: John Hess, CEO Hess Oil
• Mid-Cap Companies: Lawrence Blanford, CEO Green Mountain Coffee Roasters
• Small-Cap-Companies: Neil Eckert, CEO, Climate Change PLC, parent of Chicago Climate Exchange
• Private Companies: Scott Lang, CEO, Silver Spring Networks
• NGO/Non-Profits: Paul Dickinson, CEO, Carbon Disclosure Project
• Social Entrepreneur: Michael Eckhart, CEO, American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE)
• Corporate Foundation: Stanley Litow, President, IBM Foundation
• Government: Luke Ravenstahl, Mayor, City of Pittsburgh
