Taking Care of Business
By Joel Makower
Last week's green business news was dominated by Wal-Mart's introduction of its Sustainability Index, an emerging tool intended to elicit information from the company's tens of thousands of suppliers about their environmental performance. The ambitious project is aimed at eventually creating customer-facing product ratings. But the keyword here is "eventually": Such ratings may be five years away. Still, the announcement garnered plenty of media coverage, and more than a little analysis. You can read my analysis here, as well as that of GreenBiz.com senior contributor Marc Gunther, GreenerComputing.com executive editor Preston Gralla, and Catherine Greener, a veteran shop-floor quality expert who attended Wal-Mart's launch event at the company's Arkansas headquarters.
Meanwhile, things didn't exactly stop in the rest of the business world. We reported on developments from AT&T, Texas Instruments, General Electric, Xerox, and a project involving Cisco and IBM. Not bad for the middle of July. Call it a Midsummer's Bright Green.
The Power of Analytics: Speaking of IBM, our one-hour webcast, By the Numbers: Greening Your Business Operations, sponsored by IBM, will be this Wednesday, July 22, at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Thanks to the hundreds who have signed up to hear -- and participate in -- a discussion, which I'll moderate, with senior executives from IBM, Johnson Controls, and Eaton Corp. There's still room, if you'd like to join us.
The Next Energy Innovators: The fruits of our recent collaboration with BusinessWeek have been released: a list of 25 of the most intriguing up-and-coming U.S. energy companies that you probably haven't heard of -- yet. It's part of a special section in the magazine this week on The Next Energy Innovators. As another part of that section, I offer some thoughts on whether clean energy represents the "next Internet."
And Now for Something Complete Different: Here's a little summer diversion -- the republication of my 1989 book, Woodstock: The Oral History. The book has just been reissued to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the historic music festival. It's an amazing story of how Woodstock happened, and almost fell apart. You can read more about it here.
