How Companies Celebrate Earth Day

Published April 21, 2009

Every Day SHOULD Be Earth Day

I applaud those companies that are celebrating Earth Day today and especially those who are doing special events all month. Yes, there can be overhype on one particular day and it goes in one ear and out the other for most people. But anything we can do to make this a part of every day thinking is welcome.

Here in the south for instance, the idea of a green or sustainable business or lifestyle is not thought about much. It can be a pretty tough educational process to bring people up to speed about what being green can do for them as well as the earth.

For this reason I would like to see a concerted effort to make April Earth Month. Today my children went to school in green clothes and are having green events. There are events around town to celebrate today but what about tomorrow? Anything to get them to continue putting that old newspaper in the recycling bin or replacing that light bulb with a CFL would help us all.

Overhyping Earth Day

I found the comment in the article about possibly overhyping Earth Day interesting. Our company is new to the Earth Day event. This is the first year that the Corporate group actually had any kind of notice and information regarding it. It has strictly been site to site celebrations/events. It is not nearly organized as some of the companies listed, but at least its a start. Hopefully the Corporate group will build on this and offer a more organized approach to Earth Day in the future.

That being said, I have responsibility for sites across North America, and some regions/sites think Earth Day is for the tree huggers and hippies. Other regions/sites have jumped on board. For example, some sites have decided to remove styrofoam cups and provide all of their office employees reusable steel mugs. Others took donations to plant trees, and others volunteered at local beach & wilderness park cleanups.

So for the companies already on the "Green" train, enjoy your cake and keep up the good work. Hopefully, with more companies will jump on board. Even better, maybe some politicians will get on board with the sustainability effort.

Companies and Earth Day

I'm so glad you highlighted these positive examples of how companies are celebrating Earth Day. Hopefully these case studies will serve as examples to guide other firms approaches to commemorating Earth Day '10.

Support Green Companies

One simple way to do your part - its one of the things I do - is to get the word out on partners, clients, vendors or any other environmentally friendly company that you believe in.

So, today I'm working to get the word out on e3Bank (http://www.e3bank.com), a 100% green bank.

Earth Day Hype

There are millions of people who are not aware of Earth Day. I've spoken with several today. For those working with sustainable organizations and focused on green, it's wonderful to see businesses actively participate in this celebration. While some see hype, the time span in which environmental concerns have been part of mainstream business goals is short. Recognizing the good that comes from these activities is better than ignoring the damage. Applying the grammar of green to our communication efforts ensures that announcements are based on authentic accomplishments and engagement.

Interesting info

Hi,

Thanks for this info. This is really helpful!

Trees to employees and community

We celebrated by giving out 1000 trees (500 Flowering Dogwoods & 500 Tulip Trees). We have one of each tree to each of our employees and then gave out 150 trees amongst three schools to give to children.
